The Arc Southern Chesapeake’s
Mission & Vision

The Arc Southern Chesapeake has supported people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families for more than 50 years, grounded in the belief that everyone deserves meaningful choices and the ability to grow. We are guided by these values, to the fullest extent possible, in everything that we do. And we plan to keep that momentum in the next 50 years.

Mission Statement

Create opportunities for independence and personal success for people with different abilities in inclusive communities.

Our mission is built on a foundation of five core values:

Acceptance

We appreciate all people with all different abilities. We inspire all sectors of the community to include all people with different abilities in the fabric of their lives.

Fulfillment

We help every person find meaning and fulfillment in their lives through independent living and decision-making to the extent possible.

Worth

We value every person regardless of the barriers that they may face every day. We inspire every person to believe they are important and valuable and we help them to find their courage to be the best version of themselves that they can be.

Respect

We model respect in the way we communicate with each other, in the way we treat each other, in the way we offer choices to each other, and in the way we consider perspectives of others that are different from our own.

Joy

We celebrate every part of life and accomplishments of hard work to create joy – accomplishing personal and professional milestones and goals, celebrating birthdays, changing seasons, and all types of holidays.

Our Mission
In Action

Each day, we work to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Southern Chesapeake region are widely welcomed, accepted, and included in the communities where they live and work. We support them as they build confidence and pursue their goals with dignity, choice, and self-determination. These beliefs guide our approach:

  • Everyone deserves a good quality of life and the right to choose how they live.
  • Everyone can grow and reach their potential with the right support and opportunities.
  • Small steps toward independence are empowering for each person and their families.
  • Living independently is an ongoing, dynamic journey.
  • Strong partnerships create more opportunities.
  • A positive, team-focused approach helps us learn, grow, and drive out fear and blame.
  • Thoughtful decisions are guided by objective data and information.
  • Continuous improvement helps us stay consistent, efficient, agile, and flexible.
